Mil€x Observatory – english section

«In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together».

USA President Dwight D. Eisenhower
Farewell speech, 17 january 1961

MIL€X – Osservatorio sulle Spese Militari Italiane is an independent monitoring tool inspired by the principles of scientific objectivity and political neutrality. MIL€X is not a prejudicially anti-militarist project and is not ideologically opposed to military spending, recognising the need to keep our armed forces efficient and modern. However, the project aims to make these expenditures transparent by objectively analysing the critical aspects of their rationality, usefulness and sustainability, in particular with regard to weapons acquisition programmes. The problem is not the purchase of new aircraft, new tanks and new warships, but the means and criteria by which these purchases are made, starting with the need for Parliament to be properly and fully informed about the technical characteristics and costs of the required equipment, the actual operational need in terms of the suitability of the system and the quantities required, possible alternatives that can be evaluated, the logistical sustainability of the programme in the long term, etc.

MIL€X Observatory provides a public service aimed at the collection, analysis and dissemination of data and information (exclusive news, surveys, studies, official documents, databases, data analysis and fact checking) to help raise the awareness of citizens, their representatives in the institutions, information operators and social activists, so as to make possible a conscious and informed democratic control over one of the largest and most politically significant items of public expenditure.

MIL€X was founded in 2016 on the initiative of Enrico Piovesana and Francesco Vignarca, with the collaboration of the Nonviolent Movement, founded by Aldo Capitini in 1962, and as part of the activities of the Italian Disarmament Network.
